I've not tried Nagios, so can't comment on it, but I've had many years
of good service from Big Brother monitoring about 20 systems and a
hundred or so services.  

It has got a slightly jury rigged feel to it, because it's mostly a
collection of shell scripts, but I've never yet had a false negative,
and it's easily extensible.

Agree on BMC Patrol though.  There's no way it justifies it's ludicrous
price tag.
