Take a look at the remastering section on knoppix.net for customising
the actual CD with your personal prefs. There is also some blokes
attempts to boot knoppix from a USB pen drive on slashdot here

I think that the Bootable CD is the way to go though simply because just
about anything will boot from a CD.
