What happens if you go:
	telnet localhost.dcs.bbk.ac.uk smtp

For that matter what does localhost.dcs.bbk.ac.uk resolve to ? It does
seem a strange name. Should you not be connecting to mailer.dcs.bbk.ac.uk. ?
