In reality, unless you install every single package known to <insert distro 
here> you probably won't need more than around 1gb of diskspace, plus a 
swap partition, too.

No, but you can use this list to ask for help. Questions about specific 
problems are best rather than "how do I install linux?".

Linux won't defragment a FAT or FAT32 partition. Either use the utility 
that comes with Windows to do so, or buy a commercial defragmenter. 
Diskeeper is very good.

Yes, it can.  Linux will quite cheerfully read and write FAT and FAT32 
partitions.
