Named after the website at www.slashdot.org.
The website is so popular, that any other websites linked to at 'slashdot' are
immediately inundated with traffic. So In is the Undation that frequently the
linked websites are unable to cope with the traffic: existing surfers are
disconnected, further surfers are denied any access, and if the website pays
per Gb bandwidth, it will see its bill rocket. The process is called
slashdotting.
Similar things happen to sites linked from www.fark.com, where the same
process is called 'farking'. "Behold", says the animation there, "The Power
Of Fark!"
