startx, xinit, X. All the same.

xev gives

KeyPress event, serial 22, synthetic NO, window 0x400001,
    root 0x40, subw 0x0, time 9129, (79,102), root:(81,104),
    state 0x0, keycode 135 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:  ""

KeyRelease event, serial 22, synthetic NO, window 0x400001,
    root 0x40, subw 0x0, time 9129, (79,102), root:(81,104),
    state 0x0, keycode 135 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:  ""

for all keys except ctrl and alt.
