righty,

the manual is very old,

i will presume you have a 2.4.xx kernel (2.4.20?)

go into /usr/src/

do this

# tar -xjvf kernel-source-2.4.20.tar.bz2

the -x means extract,
-j means filter it through bzip2
-v means tell you what its doing
-f specifies the filename is the next word

this will make a folder called kernel-source-2.4.20 in /usr/src

go into this and type 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig' if you are in X

write back when you get to this stage :-)
