Those Promise "RAID Controllers" are really just IDE adapters with a
fancy BIOS that tries to make software look like hardware. When the
computer is started this BIOS provides drivers to do raid. Once Linux is
loaded it doesn't use the BIOS so has to provide its own software raid,
using the ataraid driver. There are some IDE controllers that do RAID in
hardware, eg 3ware.
