[Gllug] OT: Source control - backup

Quick question, as I know some of you here are programmers.  

Say you checkout a file, it will take you about a week to finish coding, but
in the mean time there are people checking the file out as well, making
small changes and integrating again.

>From a backup point of view, how do you handle keeping the file safe until
you check it back in...? ( I realise it's probably product specific but not
being a programmer I haven't had much xp with them...)
