[Gllug] Help please with a problem on a Debian box

Hello,
   I needed to re-route a cable, so I shut down a computer running Debian
Woody bf24 that I am trying to set up. After restarting, the monitor showed
a stream of lines, one every few seconds, as follows:

svc: bad direction 256, dropping request

   The messages appear in anything I try to view, pushing everything else
off screen. although they do not prevent console commands from working.
   I am able to telnet and su in to the computer and access it normally.
Could anyone please give me a hint about where I should look for the
problem? About the only suggestion from Google for svc is Stanford Validity
Checker.
