I have no reason to believe they wouldn't have kept running forever.

Forever is a long time.
Remember the Unix 32 bit time is running out in 2038(? I thought it was
sooner)
Unix servers will  run wild, and insist on having any further input
only via 1970 vintage teletypes.
Hey, let's start the Y2038 panic now...
