You can combine Mondo Rescue and a regular tape backup.  The problem
with tape backups, in the case of a major failure, is getting back to a
state where you can recover the backup from the tapes.  With Mondo you
could, for example, take an occasional snapshot of your system to CD (or
whichever is the most suitable of the several options for backup media
with Mondo) and do regular backups to tape.  If there's a disaster you
can restore a working system very quickly using Mondo and then bring it
up to date using the tapes.

My personal choice for tape backup software would be Amanda.
