[Gllug] color in xterm emacs

Hi,
    I'm trying to get emacs to use color (eg syntax highlighting) - when 
running in an xterm ...

color works fine for everything else - lynx, ls, vi ...

and color works fine if emacs is running as an X app

I've googled away and found loads of people with the same problem - but 
no solutions so far :(
