Use a third CAT 5 cable that comes from a machine known to work properly. If
the problem recurs, you can exclude the original cable from fault. If the
problem doesn't recur, you can reasonably assume it was indeed faulty.
I can see no value in blinkenlights here except to impress the clueless!
