Grid and Cluster Computing Group Seminar

Monday June 16th

Fyvie Hall

Regent St

Please see http://www.cpc.wmin.ac.uk/grid/event.html
for more details and how to get there.

In many enterprises and research institutes, there is an ever-increasing
need for computing power in order to tackle increasingly large computational
problems. For example, urban transport engineers should take on-line
decisions according to the expected traffic increase in an overcrowded
district of a large city; air-jet companies must solve problems ranging from
crash-analysis to aerodynamic design; and financial services companies must
perform time-critical portfolio and risk analysis.

In order to solve these high computational demand tasks companies and
universities had to purchase supercomputers in the past. However, new
advances in IT made it possible to choose much cheaper and much more
cost-effective solutions. These alternatives are the usage of clusters and
the Grid concept.

Professor Peter Kacsuk will be talking about Grid and Cluster computing in
general.

Professor Steve Winter will be explaining how CSCS are using Grid and
Cluster computing in an EU traffic simulation project.
