[Gllug] getting a suse to boot

You could possibly log in using ssh from another box or at the lilo 
prompt putting a 3 after the kernel you want to boot.

for example if you are running lilo you can press tab which might provide:

linux
linux.backup

you you would type linux 1

in grub you can edit the boot  by pressing e and then e to edit the boot 
command and putting a 3 at the end.  Press escape and then b to boot.

Have you also tried going to a virtual terminal by pressing Control + 
Alt + F1
