well this is what the companies argue - Microsoft being a case in point 
- and yet last I heard Microsfot were still not providing staff with any 
training on anti-trust laws (apparently this is standard practise for 
big companies in the states)

I know that I have worked in places where the management claimed it was 
up to staff to ensure software was licensed ...

the bottom line is that companies (thier management/owners) are 
obligated to take reasonable care that employees follow the law

I have tried to persuade management to but licenses for software and 
been told 'why spend money when we won't get caught' !

not to mention the spammers ...
