Dear Simon, John and fellow GLLUGers,

Yes, running rhn-applet-gui puts the icon back, and it
doesn't need to be run by root.  You only need to be root
when you activate the up2date program.

I thank you all for the help, but I'm still puzzled why I
can't do what they say in their documentation.
