Maybe you shouldn't answer your own questions so quickly.  It's quite
possible to do it so as to be portable in almost all of them.  Bash,
csh, tcsh, zsh and the various Korn clones will all run vanilla Bourne
Shell scripts.  Several of the suggested solutions would work on all of
them.
