So what you're saying is that the laptop, while connected to the switch, can
see anything else connected to the switch; yet it cannot see anything on the
slow speed hub, and I assume, cannot see anything else on the hub even when
directly connected to it?

It sounds like your laptop is not autosensing the speed of the network
traffic, confining itself to 100mb. What you could do is cold boot your
thinkpad after connecting to the 10mb hub and see if you can then ping the
MacOS box. If you can, this would be an autosense problem. (If your interface
is hotswappable, such as a pcmcia card, you could remove it and return it
rather than a cold reboot).

If you still can't ping -n then other machines, perhaps your machine is being
forced to the speed. Are you insmoding the driver with something like 'insmod
driver options=0x100'? Intel's NICs (and others) are forced to certain speeds
this way. What does dmesg tell you about the interface speed? Is tulip_diag
(or whatever's similar for your nic) able to tell you more, allow you to play
with the settings?

I think the general point here is that you need to localise your problem much
more than you've done so far!

Cheers,
