I don't understand the apparent confusion over sendmail's capabilities.
There are no practical restrictions.

In the words of Mike O'Dell (one of UUnet's founders), sendmail is "the
world's most widely used artificial intelligence program", which is a
pretty accurate observation.

At the core, sendmail is primarily a rule interpreter, plus an amount
of library-style utilities.  Everything a sendmail installation does
is defined by the configuration file, which is more of a Prolog style
program than a configuration file.  You can do Towers of Hanoi in
sendmail (though admittedly I have never tried).
