There are a fair few mail apps on PDA that will just grab the headers
first, which helps a lot.

On a sort of related note to current topics of discussion, and
because I'm grumpy about it, quick general rant about my attempts to
make my Palm T3 connect to the 'net with my new-ish Samsung C100 via the
IrDA modem. This should be easy, surely...

...but no. Some specific Sony, Siemens and Nokia models are listed
specifically in my Palm. There is an updated pack of drivers I can
download, but no new manufacturers are in the list. So what do you
do if your phone doesn't work? There is a generic "GSM phone" option,
but that failed. Gah. I thought all IrDA modems were the same...I
suppose I'm learning the hard way.

Samsung's support responded to my e-mail very speedily, but alas
with absolutely nothing to say of interest. It was also sent in
HTML *only* (this is how I justify this being slightly relevant):

>Dear Customer,

All I had asked for was the speed & init string to use. And now
I'm supposed to telephone India for help? I told them I was in the UK!

..so I end up finding some russian web page in Google's cache,
which suggests an init string that does actually get my phone to
dial up. Yay! Yay for random russian web forums (they have saved me
before).

I've replied to Samsung suggesting they shouldn't send HTHL only
e-mails and politely asking why they can't provide an init string.
Something tells me it's in vain.

Sorry for ranting. I know it's a bit off topic - anyone by any chance
got the same set of gadgets? I really did think that connecting phones
and PDAs via IrDA was a no-brainer. I guess everyone has moved onto
bluetooth and doesn't care anymore.

Sarah (feeling slightly better now)
