Wireless LAN would be cool, since IME it's a lot simpler to set up
than infrared. (Does my Zaurus even have infrared?? I've never ever
managed to get an irda connection going on any device, even my mobile
phone!)

WLAN would also laptops to join in the fun.

But what would we do with it.

I was thinking everyone could run a small daemon process that we'd
publish, which would listen out for tasks allocated by a central
server (ie. laptop). The task could be simple and pre-defined, such
as:

* Working out a small part of a fractal set. Very 1980s, but visually
  quite good.

* Brute-force search for a small TSP? Could also be quite visual with
  the help of a bit of software on the server.

* Distributed game of life. Lots of comms overhead.

* dnetc, seti, etc. - Would take far too long to do anything useful, I think.

* Ah, not forgetting ... http://www.annexia.org/freeware/dlife/ with
  archipelagos. There aren't really any good visualisation tools for
  this unfortunately.

Rich.
