Perhaps you might find it easier to start with a more 'user friendly' distro 
like SuSE, Mandrake or (dare I say) Red Hat. I've been using Linux for 3 
years and still find Debian a bit daunting - to some extent more so that LFS.

Alternatively - get to the console install and then get one thing added at a 
time. That way you can ask focussed questions and we can help little by 
little.
