A quick ps on this system shows:
%MEM VSZ RSS COMMAND
0.2 14408 1024 /usr/bin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
0.3 15232 1804 /usr/bin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
0.3 5696 1700 oafd --ac-activate --ior-output-fd=10
9.0 160816 15692 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth vt7
0.7 16608 3624 /usr/bin/gnome-session
1.4 11616 7396 /usr/libexec/gconfd-2 11
0.4 6560 2312 /usr/libexec/bonobo-activation-server --ac-activate --ior-output-fd=16
1.4 13476 7184 /usr/bin/metacity --sm-client-id=default1
1.1 17620 5760 gnome-settings-daemon --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon --oaf-ior-fd=14
2.4 22040 12552 gnome-panel --sm-client-id default2
3.1 27288 15828 /usr/bin/gnome-terminal
0.1 2000 700 gnome-pty-helper
1.7 17784 8812 gnome-volume-control
3.8 37276 19784 nautilus --no-default-window --sm-client-id default3
1.1 16264 5588 magicdev --sm-client-id default4
0.7 11344 3828 pam-panel-icon --sm-client-id default0
2.5 26660 12820 /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/rhn-applet-gui --sm-client-id default5
8.5 64476 43276 /usr/bin/galeon-bin
Now for someone who only uses gnome because it's pretty (well, we all have
our faults), that's quite a lot of memory. Probably the worst in that list
is nautilus *which I don't even use*!
And as for the developers? Well, I'm sure they're all very nice
enthusiastic people, but put it this way: only recently I was asked by a
GNOME developer my opinion on whether nautilus should have an option to have
the "Desktop" represent the user's $HOME (as opposed to ~/.Desktop/). I
worry about the look of astonishment on his face when I said "KEEP OFF MY
%*^#ING ROOT WINDOW!" I think there's an option to that effect now. :-)
