What I heard was that Stan Shebs (the original author of that frontend)
knew the GPL's requirements perfectly well, but NeXT's lawyers slapped a
mindless-proprietary-we-own-this sticker on it nonetheless and refused
to let it go out with source.
Faced with one of RMS's letters, the original author of the code was
able to convince said lawyers to respect the GPL.
