If you plan to install Red Hat, Mandrake or SuSE then you'll have no
problems partitioning the HDD - their installers make this child's
play. In fact, it's more difficult to decide which partitions to create
and how big to make each one than to actually perform the task (and
that's only a consideration if you choose 'Advanced Mode') :)

If you can bear to wait, each of these distros is on the cusp of
releasing a new version:

 - Fedora Core 1, the (Red Hat managed) distro that is, to all intents
and purposes, Red Hat 10 (see http://fedora.redhat.com/) will be
available from the 3rd of November.

 - SuSE 9.0 is plastered all over their site, although a quick check on
ftp.mirror.ac.uk indicates that it's not available for download yet.

 - Mandrake 9.2 will be available for download 'by the end of October',
unless you decide to join the Mandrake Club, in which case you can
download it now.

(I hadn't noticed until now that these three had achieved some kind of
synchronisation - anyone know if this is intentional or is it just a
coincidence? Were RH9 (or 8), SuSE 8.2 and Mandrake 9.1 released in
sync too?)

I suppose one can assume that all three of these will be a little less
stable than their current versions, at least for the time being, (I know
- it's a MS tradition, but it stands to reason). I'm only guessing -
I've been working with Windows too long I - but even if that's true
they'll be stable enough to play about with on a home box and any bugs
are likely to be patched pretty quickly.

Good luck and have lots of fun!

Richard.
