Well, this is a job for a Desktop Environment and not a WM, which the
various people blithering about the bloat of the former compared to the
latter just don't seem to understand. Personally, I use ion and spend
most of my time in terminal windows but I remember what it was like to
try to construct the system you're after. It *should* be possible with
Gnome or KDE - all that's really needed to make this work is proper
understanding of multiple workspaces across the application suite.
Unfortunately, not only do the two suites do workspaces (virtual
desktops, whatver you want to call them) differently but support within
each suite is very inconsistent.
Some of the people in this thread need to realise that there is no such
thing as a UI that is universally intuitive, helpful and accessible,
given the simple fact that no two human brains are wired the same way.
Being offended at the very existence of interfaces designed for
the way other people work is a waste of time, to put it politely.
