[Gllug] gvim question

I've recently become a vim convert, and I 'm trying to

setguifont=fixed

but vim complains this font doesn't exist. if I use the gui to choose
the fixed (or other fonts) its fine. if I try:

set guifont=-dec-terminal-medium-r-normal-*-*-140-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1

then it no longer complains when saving .vimrc but still uses a crappy
font. wtf?

I'm running

steve at bartgs43:~$ cat /etc/debian_version 
testing/unstable

maybe I need to install some more font packages? i don't seem to have
many donts to choose from anyhow.
