Actually that last suggestion of enabling "scan all LUNS" in the kernel 
appears to of worked.
I've only had time to recompile my kernel tonight,
and I've already been able to copy across all of my pics.

This is a major bonus.
While my windoze 98 partition recognised the camera straight away,
it would be capable of copying across 1 pic if I was lucky before it 
hanged ;)
