Actually, as I recall, there are some nefarious goings on between MS
Internet Explorer and MS Internet Information Server (which most .asp
pages are served up from). I can't remember the details, but it was
something along the lines of a non-standard 'handshaking' protocol which
makes other browsers appear much slower. Unfortunately I can't remember
the details but I'm sure some bright spark (or Mr Google) will be able
to conjure them up.
However, a page not displaying at all is more likely to be caused by
the site developers relying on things like 'fancy', MS focused, client
side javascript, etc. One site that has recently improved is the Co-op
bank's internet banking site - the 'write once, run anywhere' Java
applet didn't run on Firebird (my browser of choice) but their new site
looks a bit more basic (HTML rather than Java) but works so much better.
If only all sites would undergo a similar 'evolution' - I made a point
of sending a very positive response to the Co-op when they made the
change ;-)
Another possible problem is if the site relies on pop-up windows. I've
come across several places that seemed not to be working until I noticed
the information icon in the bottom left corner of the browser to tell me
that popup windows had been blocked! That wouldn't stop a well designed
web-application working... but then a well designed web-app wouldn't be
relying on pop up windows to work!
