mv ~/.gconf ~/.gconf.old
mv ~/.gconf2 ~/.gconf2.old
mv ~/.gnome ~/.gnome.old
mv ~/.gnome2 ~/.gnome2.old


and try again ?
If it's worked try moving some of the above back to what they were 
manually.. it might help narrow down the problem.
