The more cynical might suggest that it's a marketing ploy to try and
stir up a sense of exclusivity.
It could also be considered a method to stop people signing up in order
to get a base from which to s[cp]am people, as well as a way to collect a
whole web of information (similar to orkut) about who is related to who.
