Nix mused on the difference between
'you have less porridge' and 'you have fewer items', and
'less than 10 items' and 'fewer than 10 items'

I guess the reason why the second pair of alternatives sounds OK, whilst the
first does not, is that a specific number is mentioned!

However, what about 'maximum 10 items' at the checkout?
Or would everyone understand that!!?

Personally, I would prefer a checkout labelled (for the purposes of buying
sandwiches etc at M & S lunchtime):

Max 5 items
No items with faulty barcodes
No items without barcodes
No reduced items (fat chance in M&S)
No credit cards
No anything that slows the checkout process to a crawl
No trainees on the checkout till
