well - I've solved the urgent problem

alsermixergui has a button to set the capture channel so I've managed to
do it this way.

alsamixer doesn't seem to display any info about the capture channel
anymore :(

the less urgent problem is to get to grips with Linux sound in general
and alsa in particular.

This is one thing that never seems to just work for me - but once I have
it up and running it keeps working for a year or two before I perform a
new install or get new hardware - by which time I have forgotten what I
did before !

I'd file a bug report if I knew a bit more - but bug reports of the type
I could file often seem to do more harm than good.
