What complicates things is that you'd normally have one address range for
the PPP setup and then your /30 net *behind* that but I have to tell my
router that the IP address on the ADSL interface is on the same network as
the server behind it. Weird.

Had a quick look but I need pppoe installed to do that and I havne't got
access from home so...

Well, because it's urgent I had to give up and buy a Netgear router (DG632).
It's still a weird setup but is closer to working than the modem setup.

I'll still be looking into getting the modem solution to work because it
doesn't waste an IP address.
I'm wondering what the chances are for my ISP to give me a /30 network in
addition to my PPP setup?!
