Hi,
Some friends of mine have run into a problem with syslogd and I thought the
collective brain power gathered on this list may be able to help:-

>> - the problem with syslogd when started with -u syslogd as in this case
>> kill -HUP (pidnumber) did not restart syslogd as it does when started
>> without -u option.
>> killing syslogd does not remove too the pid in var/run, so next
>> restartsyslogd fail.

>Perhaps this is normal behaviour for syslogd?

>Rotating the logs should also restart syslogd, so I've tried forcing the
>logs to rotate with '/usr/sbin/logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.conf ' and logged
>in /var/log/messages is:
>'xxxxxx syslogd 1.4.1: restart.'
>BUT the process is not killed and the syslogd.pid file in /var/run is
>unchanged...

>I get the same message logged if I run /usr/local/bin/restartsyslogd
>directly from the command line, and the process number stays the same...
