Wulf,

Basically there is a Linux server sharing MP3's via smb and NFS and many
mostly windows clients accessing these file. The IDv3 tag is used in
generating the library (www.mediajukebox.com is the software used for this
currently) Many of these files have no tag at all so they are
incorporated into this library purely on the filename. When these files
are updated and the information saved into the tag the file is completly
rewritten to add the tag. Some of the clients connect via a wireless
network so if they update the tag on 20 tracks from an album 20 x 4mb per
track approx) 80mb is read then rewqritten across the wireless network
which can take a couple of minutes. This only happens the first time as
now that a tag exists in the file and subsequent write only updates a
portion of the file and happens almost instantly. The plan is to add
locally empty ID3 tags to these files so that subsequent updates are very
quick. Also updating the tag on the local disk should be far far faster
than updating the file across a 1 - 7mb wireless network.

Cheers for the suggestion I will take a look and see if that is suitable.
