You think the people who write about computers know much about
computers? Why aren't they working in the industry then?

My experience (as ex- and sometimes freelance computer journo) is that
the vast majority have only the vaguest idea about technical issues.
Some are very very good at understanding the business side of things,
which is understandable and acceptable.

The majority have no idea about either side of the field: neither
technical nor business-oriented. The Grauniad's various IT-ish
sections seem to be particularly bad for this.

I got out of the game (apart from the poor pay) mainly because I
couldn't deal with the situation of clueless non-technical people
editing my copy, or stealing my (technical) ideas and calling them
their own. Having someone ask Jerry Yang (Yahoo! founder, mainly a
techie) about his hobbies at a press conference really showed me how
much my esteemed colleagues knew...

There are, however, some honourable exceptions. There are people in
the game who really know their shit.

Imagine a very committed funeral home director, whose
proudest achievement in adulthood was to be elected
president of the Queenbeyan and District Funeral Home
Directors' Association--then halve his personality and
halve it again, and you have pretty well got John Howard.
