The benefits of an integrated solution are many - particularly in a 
business environment.

That's not to say that the benefits cannot be produced by integration 
between distinct components such as a common email client and a separate 
calendaring application however there is an evident need for hooks to draw 
these together to produce a similar level of functionality.

As an aside, apart from scheduling what does Exchange provide beyond 
email?

What is the hurdle that Free Software solutions need to jump to replace 
Exchange properly.
