Most serial scanners will output a default ASCII representation of the UBCID
scanned, however, some scanners will also provide function modes that allow
for the size, reflectivity and type of barcode to be configured.
Barcode scanners and recipt printers are about the easiest to work with.
If you are going the serial route, PERLE systems do some very good serial port
extender cards. These provide powered serial ports and powered USB ports.
At a guess, Symbol would be the scanner MFG and if so, JPOS drivers are
available as well as OPOS.
Just stay away from 469x hardware from IBM, its a pig to get working. Took us
weeks to get firmware, kernel drivers, userland AIP layer and Java to work
together reliably.
