I used to think that RMS was an extreme idealist, unable to be
pragmatic about what he does. But over time, I find myself agreeing
more and more with his stance[1], and this is one particular example.

There is no such thing as "intellectual property", so your question is
meaningless. It's a term used by the media and others to lump together
three quite separate areas of law. In your case, I suspect from
context that you're asking who retains copyright on the piece of work.
As others have said, you do. If someone else decides to modify that
work, then they hold copyright over the bit they did, and you still
do for your work. The collective work is covered by two copyrights.
