If you use ALSA, then there's a little thing called dmix, which will
multiplex sound streams at the ALSA PCM level.

With a bit of magic in ~/.asoundrc, and minor configuration of your
various audio apps, you're good to go... almost. With me, it has a habit
of locking up, although I've heard that might just mean I need to play
with buffer sizes.

Some card's drivers might do this kind of thing on the card, but since
I'm using an ageing AWE64 Value ISA card, then it always ends up being
in software for me.
