Further to my recent post, many thanks for the various replies on how to
install both windwos and linux on the same machine.

I followed (I can't remember whose) kind instructions;
partioned the drive partially for windows from the linux boot cd,
aborted the linux install
installed windows
installed linux - partitioning the remainder of the drive appropriately

It all worked like a dream - although a few post installation hicoughs
with Mandrake linux as follows:

despite partitioning it with different partitions for /var /usr /home
and defining the mount points, I subsequently discovered it had installed
everything in the root partition. I have moved over /usr /var etc to the
separate partitions, but have not done anything about the boot partition
as yet. I assume to deal with tghis properly I will have to
a) move the files over and create the mount point
(prob have to re-create the filesystem on the partition)
b) modify lilo and rerun to ensure that the boot-loader can find the kernel
??? Anything I've missed on this ?

despite defining an IP address at install time for the 3com NIC, mandrake
insisted on defining DHCP as the default startup for the NIC; which slowed
down startup somewhat ('specially since no ethernet connection initially !)
and even more annoyingly (which took me ages to figure out !) ran some sort
of daemon which kept changing /etc/resolv.conf back to its initial setting
every time I edited it. editing the appropriate config file for eth0 solved
the problem once I had located it. I am not sure that mandrake's initialiation
stuff isn't even more baroque than redhat !!

Incidentally, I bought a Belkin omnivew 2-port KVM siwtch from Simply for 25
quid roughly, so I could switch machines, and I have to say it works brilliantly
- thoroughly recommend it. It specs say up to 60Hz, but my monitor is running
at 70 without any probs.

Two questions I hope you more knowledgeable people can answer:

Is it possible to get rid of the the annoying shadowy star at the bottom rh
of every console screen?

The dvd player provided by mandrake produces rather indifferent quality -
not so much the resolution as odd artifacts particulary on fast moving
objects/people. My card is a cheapo Asus Radeon 9200SE with a mere 128MB
memory - but since I don't intend to do any 3D games I presume it is good
enough. Any better dvd/mpg players recommended ? (xine comes to mind, but
I don't want to download/install if it is generally thought to be inadequate).

TIA

Tim
