How about adding a small section to http://www.gllug.org.uk/online.html
explaining why using plain text email is the expected behaviour on mailing
lists (in general - we want to educate people) and on these lists in
particular?

It could also be added to the automated welcome email everyone receives when
they subscribe to one of the lists.
