By definition,
Debian Unstable (Sid) contains the latest versions available, which may
well have a range of major or minor bugs, any of which may cause other
packages to break.
Debian Testing (currently Sarge) contains package versions which have
survived for a specified time in Unstable without causing serious breakages
in other packages, but may still contain a range of bugs that are not yet
sorted, even if only for some architectures. It is intended that it will be
frozen and become the official stable version at some time when the latest
installer and a few other major enhancements are ready and tested, and the
known bug count is low. Individual package developers and maintainers have
already been asked to concentrate on fixing existing bugs rather than
introducing new versions to the current Sarge.
Debian Stable (currently Woody) is frozen at a specific time, with a very
low total number of known bugs. It is intended to be as safe and reliable as
possible. No new versions are introduced from that time as they could
introduce new unforseen problems, and it is not updated apart from security
or other urgent bug-fixes. It is therefore well known that the software
contained in this distribution may not be the latest and most recent, but
the system administrator is given the option and tools to be able to upgrade
or install any or all packages to later versions.
Knoppix and other distributions can take their choice of software in the
same way as any system administrator, and Debian appreciate the receipt of
any bug reports or fixes that are found as a result.
