Sorry to answer this late, this is my suggestion:
1. Go to the drive manufacturer website, you'll find mechanical 
specifications for your drive. For instance, on an IBM drive, the 
mounting holes are 6-32 UNC. This is an easy way of finding the thread 
without using a caliper.

2. Go to a spare parts retailer and search for machine screws with this 
thread. For instance, type "6-32 UNC" in the search box of 
http://rswww.com/ Choose a screw length that fits with your drive and case.

Only problem with this method is that you can only buy a bag of 100 
screws. Unlike Maplin prices, it will cost you around £2 + shipping.
