There will always be packages that are lagging, because the developers
are volunteers and have other things to do.

However, if the packages from the debian archive are too old you can
still:

    * install from rpm, using alien (and other exciting ways of
      automatically breaking your computer :)

    * build from source and install yourself

Which means that, at worst, it's as good as the others for software
availability.

And, for the record, the current unstable version of postgres is 7.4.1,
which afaict is the latest version.
