I'd agree with this - I've been using via mobo's for about five years now and 
they've always worked...
which distro are you using?
you miight also try dmesg | grep usb to see what your kernel thinks you have..

if you absolutely feel you need to buy new USB ports, hav a look at the dabs 
value range of perpherals - I haven't found anything that doesn't work with 
linux yet, and they're very cheap...
