have you tried running strace to see what its trying to do ?
e.g $ strace mixer_applet2 

you might want to filter it through grep as you get lots of info.

or you could try lsof -p PID , where pid is the Process ID  of the running mixer_applet2 ,
to find out what files/nodes/sockets it is using at the moment.
